MINIMAL ENERGY CONSUMPTION & USE OF RENEWABLE ENERGY DURING THE PRODUCTION PROCESS

WESTWINKEL – A SOCIAL QUARTER

Location: Unterfarrnbach, Fürth, Germany

Date of construction: April 2020 – October 2021

Info: In the Fürth district of Unterfarrnbach, the last large area in the inner-city area is being turned into a new residential area. Living space for about 600 people is to be created there. The conversion area is being built over by the ESW, the Evangelisches Siedlungswerk. Since the ground-breaking ceremony in summer 2019, over 190 affordable rentals, 123 parking spaces and 70 garages have been built in five construction phases under the project name “Westwinkel”, as well as a day-care centre and a residential group for parentless youths. ESW is investing around 55 million euros. For construction phases 1 and 2, the client relies on the climate-neutral (TÜV Nord Cert Standard TN-CC 020) Poroton brick S9 with a wall thickness of 42.5 cm. This way, the buildings meet the KfW 55 standard. The bricks easily provide the particularly high level of noise protection towards the main road. In the first construction phase, the S9 was used in the form of a small number of standardised Redbloc prefabricated parts. As a result, the construction progress was particularly fast. The architect had calculated the following in advance: based on 250 square metres per day, five teams in five buildings can erect the walls for one storey per day in parallel. This meant that progress on the construction site was particularly fast, and a small team was all that was needed.
